Sierra Club Endorses Georgette Gomez for City Council

Gómez Is The Environment’s Choice With Endorsements from Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, and Donna Frye

CITY HEIGHTS – The Sierra Club, one of California’s oldest, largest and most trusted environmental organizations, has endorsed Georgette Gómez for San Diego City Council.

Brian Elliott, Sierra Club San Diego Political Committee Chair, said ”Georgette Gómez is a true champion for the environment. Having previously been honored with Sierra Club San Diego's annual FEAT Award, Georgette has fought to hold polluters accountable, worked to reduce children’s exposure to toxic chemicals, and advocated expansion of San Diego’s use of clean and renewable energy. Sierra Club is proud to endorse Georgette for City Council and supports her dedication to protect our environment."

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 by legendary conservationist John Muir and today is one of the most active, influential grassroots environmental groups in California.
The endorsement from Sierra Club cements Georgette Gómez as the Environment’s Choice for City Council.  Earlier in the campaign, the League of Conservation Voters, former Councilwoman Donna Frye, and Nicole Capretz, chair of the Climate Action Campaign, all endorsed Georgette Gomez for City Council.

Georgette Gómez responded: “I’m humbled that San Diego’s most trusted environmental organizations, the Sierra Club and League of Conservation Voters have endorsed my campaign for City Council.  I’ve been fighting for healthy, clean neighborhoods and to tackle climate change my entire career.  On the City Council, I’ll fight for strong environmental protections to protect our beautiful coast, keep toxic chemicals away from kids, improve our public transit system, and make San Diego the clean energy capital of the United States.”

The Sierra Club's endorsement comes as broad support for Gómez’s City Council campaign continues to increase.  In recent weeks Gómez has been endorsed by Councilman David Alvarez, Neighborhood Leader Joe LaCava, and San Diego’s Hotel Workers Union.

Georgette Gomez is a candidate for San Diego City Council District 9. Georgette is a member of the City Heights Area Planning Committee and Associate Director of the Environmental Health Coalition’s Toxic-Free Neighborhoods campaign. Georgette and her partner, Xochitl, live in the Azalea Park neighborhood of City Heights.
